Today, 24 May, on the margins of the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA), the Global Health Centre (GHC) of the Geneva Graduate Institute will hold the high-level panel discussion entitled "A different scale: Global action to address obesity." This side event will feature the WHO Acceleration Plan to STOP Obesity launched at the WHA.
Photojournalist Lisa Krantz documented one man's losing battle with obesity. Hector Garcia Jr. weighs over 600 pounds in this image. Moving from one room to another has become nearly impossible for him, so his mother, Elena, watches over him. This four-year photographic account titled "A Life Apart: The Toll of Obesity" is accompanied by the heartbreaking testimonies of Hector and his loved ones. It is viewable here.

From 11 to 22 October 2021, the WMO will hold an extraordinary session of the World Meteorological Congress. Most decisive items will be addressed, such as the global water agenda, the Earth System Data Exchange, and hydrology strategy and plan of action. The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 54 independent states that aims to promote democracy, good government, human rights and economic development. The Commonwealth is present in Geneva through its Permanent Delegation to the United Nations. In 2011, the Commonwealth opened a new office in Geneva, offering working spaces and services to some of its small Member States. Anuja De Silva, from the Permanent delegation of the Commonwealth in Geneva, tells us more about it.

What's going on at CERAH this summer?
As we undertook quite an ambitious reform of the whole training offer at CERAH, we will dedicate the summer months mainly to finalise the teaching programme of the Diploma in Humanitarian Action starting in September. We will also continue to prepare the six Certificates in Humanitarian Action we are going to propose in the spring semester 2013.

Près d'un tiers de la population du Bangladesh vit en-dessous du seuil de pauvreté, avec une proportion considérable vivant dans l'extrême pauvreté. Le taux de malnutrition figure donc parmi les plus élevés au monde. Ce problème est particulièrement criant dans les zones rurales et les bidonvilles. Environ un tiers des adolescentes souffrent d'anémie et de carences en micronutriments. Etant donné que plus de deux tiers des jeunes filles se marient avant d'avoir 18 ans, le risque de grossesse précoce ou de donner naissance à un bébé avec un poids insuffisant est très élevé.

Die Republik und der Kanton Genf haben einen internationalen Wettbewerb für den Entwurf eines neuen Empfangsgeländes für die European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) lanciert. Jedes Jahr besuchen 100'000 Gäste das CERN und jeden Tag kommen 10'000 Nutzerinnen und Nutzer auf das Gelände. Das neue Empfangsgelände wird eine Fläche von etwa einem Hektar umfassen und soll bis 2013-2014 gebaut werden.

Tell us about UN-Water: why has a platform of this kind been created, what is its mandate, and how does it operate?
UN-Water is the coordination mechanism of the United Nations for all matters relating to water. It was set up in 2003, at the instigation of the Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), to establish or strengthen collaboration between agencies on certain key topics, such as freshwater resources and water and sanitation services, among others.

Young Reporters at UNOG opens the door of the United Nations in Geneva to high-school students (16-19) interested in international affairs to engage with experts from different organizations in a press briefing setting. Each session is topical (i.e. covering issues related to food, water or international development) and 2-3 representatives from organizations working in that area come to talk about their work and current issues.
