I am originally from the west coast of Canada, so for me the scent of summer is the sweet smell of pine trees baking in the hot sun, blended with the salty ocean breeze. I won't get back to Canada this summer but will be enjoying forest scents around Geneva!

February 2013   The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 54 independent states that aims to promote democracy, good government, human rights and economic development. The Commonwealth is present in Geneva through its Permanent Delegation to the United Nations. In 2011, the Commonwealth opened a new office in Geneva, offering working spaces and services to some of its small Member States. What fragrance is associated in your mind with summer holidays? The smell of the oceans – hard to describe since water has no odour. But for me there is a distinct and soothing aroma. It must be the mixture of seaweed and sea life carried into the beach by the waves that have skimmed off bits and pieces and churned them into a fresh fragrance.

Hiroyuki Maegawa works for the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun as its UN correspondent in Geneva. Asahi Shimbun, based in Tokyo, is one of Japan's leading newspapers. with 7.7 million copies a day for the morning edition and 2.9 million a day for the evening edition. It also has an English language online edition, as well as Chinese and Korean ones.
