What fragrance is associated in your mind with summer holidays?
I am originally from the west coast of Canada, so for me the scent of summer is the sweet smell of pine trees baking in the hot sun, blended with the salty ocean breeze. I won't get back to Canada this summer but will be enjoying forest scents around Geneva!

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 54 independent states that aims to promote democracy, good government, human rights and economic development. The Commonwealth is present in Geneva through its Permanent Delegation to the United Nations. In 2011, the Commonwealth opened a new office in Geneva, offering working spaces and services to some of its small Member States. What are you working on this summer?
I am mostly focusing on three issues. First, on the very direct responsibility that I have in a few essential areas. I'm thinking in particular about Syria - where we may still be able, if possible, to broaden our response - but also in Afghanistan, for instance.

What fragrance is associated in your mind with summer holidays?
The smell of the oceans – hard to describe since water has no odour. But for me there is a distinct and soothing aroma. It must be the mixture of seaweed and sea life carried into the beach by the waves that have skimmed off bits and pieces and churned them into a fresh fragrance.

Tell us about UN-Water: why has a platform of this kind been created, what is its mandate, and how does it operate?
UN-Water is the coordination mechanism of the United Nations for all matters relating to water. It was set up in 2003, at the instigation of the Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), to establish or strengthen collaboration between agencies on certain key topics, such as freshwater resources and water and sanitation services, among others.

The Geneva Internet Platform (GIP) was inaugurated 8 April, with an engaging and dynamic discussion on global digital politics. The inauguration event also included an Internet Governance (IG) Bazaar, featuring, among other things, the first Bitcoin ATM.
