This image, taken from the archives of the World Health Organization (WHO), shows the signature of the declaration of the global eradication of smallpox on 8 May 1980.  The declaration of the global eradication of smallpox was formally signed by the President of the 33rd World Health Assembly, Dr Abdul Rahman Al-Awadi and Dr Halfdan T. Mahler, Director General of the World Health Organization on 8 May 1980.

Ridding the world of landmines
In 1997, images of the late Princess Diana of Wales walking through a minefield and talking to landmine survivors in Angola were widely seen around the world. The images served to highlight the devastation and suffering caused by anti-personnel mines, indiscriminate, menacing weapons that remain dangerous for decades after conflicts cease, taking lives, limbs and livelihoods.

UNHCR began as a small organization in 1951, with a three-year mandate to help resettle European refugees who were still homeless in the aftermath of the Second World War. Since that time, the organization has expanded to meet the growing needs of refugees and other displaced people.This image shows three Hungarian women carrying all of their belongings and a child, arriving at the Eisenstadt Camp in Austria in 1956.
