22 July 1958: Foundation stone of the BIPRI building, the predecessor organization to WIPO
The photo shows Mr. Petitpierre, Swiss Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Political Department, adding mortar to the foundation stone of the BIRPI (Bureaux Internationaux réunis pour la protection de la proprieté industrielle, litéraire et artistique) building on July 22, 1958. BIRPI is the predecessor organization to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The BIRPI building still forms part today of WIPO's compound in Geneva.

This image was taken on 15 April 1994 at Marrakech on the occasion of the signature of the Final Act of the Uruguay Round by US Trade Representative Mickey Kantor. This signature marks the completion of the Uruguay Round negotiations (1986-1994) that were conducted under the auspices of the GATT, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. These negotiations led to the creation of the WTO.

July 2012   What is going on this summer at the Archives of the UN in Geneva? Lots of things! This summer is particularly busy. As during every summer for the last few years, we've had a growing influx of researchers from around the world who take advantage of the university holidays to come to do their research in the historical archives of the League of Nations and the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG).

July 2012   What's going on at CERAH this summer? As we undertook quite an ambitious reform of the whole training offer at CERAH, we will dedicate the summer months mainly to finalise the teaching programme of the Diploma in Humanitarian Action starting in September. We will also continue to prepare the six Certificates in Humanitarian Action we are going to propose in the spring semester 2013.

August 2012   Tell us about UN-Water: why has a platform of this kind been created, what is its mandate, and how does it operate? UN-Water is the coordination mechanism of the United Nations for all matters relating to water. It was set up in 2003, at the instigation of the Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), to establish or strengthen collaboration between agencies on certain key topics, such as freshwater resources and water and sanitation services, among others.

August 2012   What's going on this summer at the UN Information Service in Geneva? Summer is always particularly busy for the Information Service as we host lots of students, especially those who participate in our Graduate Study Programme in July, as well as the many tourists who take guided tours around the Palais des Nations. In addition, this year we are preparing for the Open Day on September 15th, when we expect to welcome thousands of local families.

August 2012   What is going on this summer at the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue? Our mediation and dialogue work continues around the calendar. We have key processes on the Middle East, Sudan and elsewhere rolling through the summer. However, thanks to the beautiful Villa Plantamour, which houses the HD Centre and is located by the Lac Léman in the Park Mon Repos, we will still very much enjoy the summer!

1994: Rwanda Red Cross volunteers monitoring and assisting displaced populations during the Rwandan Civil War
More than one million Rwandan people fled Rwanda after civil war broke out in 1994. That year the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) took responsibility for caring for 450,000 people at four refugee camps in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), for 300,000 people at four camps in Tanzania, for 200,000 people at eleven camps in Burundi, and 10,000 people at two camps in Uganda. The IFRC carried out these relief actions in collaboration with the local National Red Cross Societies.
