More than one million Rwandan people fled Rwanda after civil war broke out in 1994. That year the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) took responsibility for caring for 450,000 people at four refugee camps in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), for 300,000 people at four camps in Tanzania, for 200,000 people at eleven camps in Burundi, and 10,000 people at two camps in Uganda. The IFRC carried out these relief actions in collaboration with the local National Red Cross Societies.

Founded in early 1876 following the recommendations made in Henry Dunant's book, "A Memory of Solferino", and the creation of the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded (Military) that followed, the Serbian Red Cross treated the wounded following the outbreak of the Serbo-Turkish war in June 1876.

This image of workers in a tire factory in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) was taken in the 1970s. It illustrates the dislocation of major manufacturing processes from Europe and North America to developing countries, which was one result of the spectacular rise of multinational enterprises (MNE) in those years. Internationally operating enterprises existed already at the end of the 19th Century when technological progress lead to a first wave of global economic integration. The importance of these companies increased noticeably after WWII.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 54 independent states that aims to promote democracy, good government, human rights and economic development. The Commonwealth is present in Geneva through its Permanent Delegation to the United Nations. In 2011, the Commonwealth opened a new office in Geneva, offering working spaces and services to some of its small Member States. Anuja De Silva, from the Permanent delegation of the Commonwealth in Geneva, tells us more about it.

Im Oktober 2012 haben sich die philippinische Regierung und die Islamische Moro-Befreiungsfront (Moro Islamic Liberation Front, MILF) auf ein historisches Friedensabkommen geeinigt. Ziel ist es, den seit Jahrzehnten im Süden der Philippinen andauernden Konflikt zu beenden.
