Environment and Sustainable Development

Geneva is a global hub for international environmental governance. It is the place where some of the most critical challenges in the field of the environment are dealt with: climate change, biodiversity, deforestation, hazardous waste, weather forecasts or the preservation of ecosystems. Most secretariats of international conventions in the field of environmental protection are also based here, ensuring close collaboration and coordination of activities.

Geneva also sets the example in promoting a climate-neutral multilateralism.

Health

Geneva is a major center for health policy development. Home of the World Health Organization (WHO), it also hosts most of the new players in the field, such as GAVI, the Global Fund, DNDi and GARDP. Leading experts from international organizations, NGOs and the private sector meet here to design and implement strategies to improve global health.

It is also in Geneva that the fight against COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or malaria is coordinated and that ground-breaking solutions to improve the world’s deprived access to essential medicines, diagnosis and vaccines are developed.

Humanitarian Law and Action, Human Rights, Migration

Since the 1860s and the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), humanitarian relief for victims of floods, earthquakes or conflicts is coordinated from Geneva.

As a humanitarian hub, Geneva offers an ideal environment for coordination of humanitarian action, strategic dialogue and policy development. As a result, assistance and protection are delivered to refugees and other people in need. Human rights are at home in Geneva. With the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Human Rights Council, Secretariats of all international human rights treaties, leading human rights NGOs and renowned experts, the city offers an exceptional platform for human rights diplomacy.
