Geneva: Shaping AI for the World

Geneva will host the next Global AI Summit in 2027. Organised by the Swiss Confederation, under the leadership of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC), in collaboration with the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), the event reflects Switzerland's commitment to inclusive, multistakeholder AI governance.

The Summit will take place on 21–22 June 2027 at Palexpo, alongside AI for Good, the world's largest annual event dedicated to AI, organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Artificial intelligence is transforming our societies at an unprecedented pace. Its development and deployment raise challenges that no country can address alone: safety, transparency, equitable access and the protection of fundamental rights. International cooperation is essential to ensure that its benefits are widely shared.

Multilateralism plays a central role in AI governance, while research and innovation are equally important in addressing the challenges it presents. Businesses, research institutions and start-ups contribute directly by developing, testing and deploying these technologies.

Geneva and the Lake Geneva region benefit from a diverse economic landscape, spanning finance, commodity trading, life sciences and medical technologies, precision engineering, cybersecurity and digital trust. Across these sectors, reliability, regulatory compliance and data protection are everyday requirements. These are precisely the issues at the heart of the Summit.

The Summit will provide a high-level platform for governments, experts, businesses and civil society to advance responsible and inclusive AI governance. Switzerland aims to contribute actively to the development of an ethical, sustainable and globally coordinated framework.

Why Geneva?

For decades, Geneva has brought together governments, international organisations, civil society, academia and the private sector to address major global challenges. As a leading centre for multilateral and digital governance, it provides an environment conducive to dialogue among international stakeholders, the sharing of expertise and the development of collaborative solutions to today's challenges.

As the birthplace of the Geneva Conventions, a major centre of multilateral diplomacy and a global hub for the promotion and protection of human rights, Geneva draws on a strong humanitarian heritage and extensive experience in negotiating international treaties and building consensus. These strengths can help address the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. By bringing together the expertise of International Geneva and its economic partners, Geneva aims to contribute to global AI governance and the development of AI that is safe, inclusive and respectful of fundamental rights.

Three Ways to Help Shape the Summit

The Summit goes beyond the two-day event itself. The Swiss Confederation has established three avenues for Swiss and international stakeholders to contribute to its preparation and wider impact.

Call for Issues: Help Shape the Agenda

The Swiss Confederation invites stakeholders to identify priority issues in global AI governance. Their contributions will inform the official programme presented at Palexpo. This is not yet a call for speakers: the Confederation will first gather proposed topics before selecting speakers and assembling panels.

Road to Geneva: Have Your Event Officially Recognised

The Road to Geneva brings together events, consultations and initiatives organised in the lead-up to the Summit. Organisations can register their AI-related events scheduled to take place before June 2027. Approved events will be featured on the Summit's official website and may use the Road to Geneva logo. Applications have been reviewed on a rolling basis since August 2026.

Side Events: Bring the Summit to Life Across Geneva

Alongside the Summit, independent events will take place across Geneva, broadening participation beyond Palexpo and giving a wider range of stakeholders the opportunity to contribute. Organised and funded by their own initiators, these events will benefit from more flexible participation criteria, particularly regarding the nationality of the organising entities. Selected events will be listed on a dedicated platform.
