Louis Appia, 1818–1898: Humanitarian pioneer and co-founder of the Red Cross
This year marks the bicentennial of the birth of the war surgeon Louis Appia. Born in Hanau, he studied in Germany and practiced as a doctor in Geneva from 1849. He earned his place in history by issuing an appeal for help for the wounded of the war in Italy, on 13 May 1859, nine weeks before Henry Dunant.

CERN opens its doors for Researchers' Night.
Researchers' Night at CERN, a free and fun bilingual event, will happen this year on Friday, 28 September 2018. This is the ninth year that the world's largest particle physics laboratory has opened its doors to the public for this great European celebration of science. In 2017, it attracted more than a thousand visitors. This year, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., the event will offer even more animations to familiarize the public with its activities.

The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) will open its Geneva headquarters, Palais Wilson, on Saturday 16 June; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The day will be an occasion to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 25th anniversary of the creation of the OHCHR. It will be dedicated to the efforts of human rights defenders, civil society actors and everyone around the world who work to defend and promote the principles of the Declaration.
